Spalted Chesnut Oak Rosette

Chestnut Oak is a very common tree to the Cumberland Plateau region in which I live. It is especially prolific on the mountain where my home and shop is located. This particular wood came from the guitarist's firewood collection and he requested I handcraft a rosette from it. This is actually the second guitar that I am building for this customer and his first guitar also had a Chestnut oak rosette. The wood from that rosette was used in guitar no. 64 and guitar no. 50. I took a bit different of an approach to creating this guitar rosette. Rather than creating a sequence with the side grain, I inlaid segments of book-matched end grain. That method seems provide the highest density of grain detail.
